<span style="font-family: "calibri";">This past week I had the privilege of helping with the
annual camp put on for Ayore girls. For many years our teammates, Mirtha , Sandra
, Toni and others have invested so much time, effort and energy in reaching
these girls. It became clear through their work that it was far easier to
prevent the prostitution of young girls than it was to get the older
experienced girls to stop. For a long time occasional weekend retreats were
held to spend some intensive time with the girls and build relationships, but
about 6 years ago, the idea of putting together a week long camp was formed. Although
weekly Bible Studies in the community were making some change, the opportunity
to help the girls ‘retreat’ from their normal circumstances and have time to
silence some of the heavily negative influences surrounding them was the perfect
option for having time to express to each girl their worth and value,
especially in God’s sight.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">One of the highlights of the week was ‘Princess Night’ where
everyone dresses up and has a nice dinner together. We put together decorations
and special music. We as leaders also dress up as an example of how to dress
nicely and use appropriate amounts of makeup while still looking pretty. The
entire purpose of the night is to emphasize our worth as children of God
(hence, the princess theme) and to spend some time talking about how valuable
each person is to God and should never be given up on, or thrown out. This is particularly relevant in a culture
where girls are ‘sold’ for sometimes less than a dollar. Our identity as children of the King is a
huge part of what we would love to see these girls internalize, respecting
themselves and others.

The other weekend we went out to Poza Verde for an extended weekend camping trip. Extended because we were trying to avoid the Carnaval craziness in the city. We got a little sample of another craziness as we left the city, half a mile of semis 3-4 lanes wide leftover from the trucker blockades right before Carnaval. Notice the oncoming traffic in the photo below, we had to cross over into the oncoming lane to get around it all.

During Carnaval people tend to spray each other with dye and throw paint filled balloons at cars hence a lot of people lay low or escape the cities for a few days. As you can see below even out in Poza Verde some of the kids got painted.

We joined Cesar's supporting church who were also out there camping out. We had a great time getting to know them and making new friends. They boys and I stayed in that tent under the tree to the right.
It has
been a long time dream of our team to be able to host a conference for indigenous
missionaries to indigenous people. These men and women work tirelessly in their
own communities to bring the light and life of Christ to dark places. Because
they work in their own communities, often in incredibly isolated places, it can
be very difficult for these brothers and sisters to receive any type of
encouragement or refreshment.
River Beni- view from our hostel

Our goal was to be able to provide them a week of
respite, refreshment and spiritual renewal away from their daily grind. Most of
the time these are the pastors and missionaries who are leading, planning and
directing their own church conferences, so we wanted to give them a place to
come and just receive the Word. Even pastors and teachers need space to heal,
refresh and rejuvenate them to be able to continue doing the work God has
called them to. They are only human too, struggling with their own challenges,
fears and doubts.

This
team was great because they were basically responsible for putting together
this conference. The pastor from the church brought the messages each morning
and evening. I was even able to sit and enjoy the encouraging messages this
Pastor spoke. There were several from the church’s worship team and brought
incredible music to this tiny church in the middle of nowhere. Others were
caring for the missionary kids- allowing them to enjoy fun crafts, songs and
times of teaching, allowing the MKs to relax for a week instead of just being
the missionary kid with high expectations for model behavior. Other team
members were able to spend time in prayer and counseling individuals and
couples. I know of one couple in particular that benefited from the pastoral
counseling as they were on the verge of separation.
I believe around 50 adults came
(plus a few random people from the community) that represented around 7
different indigenous nations in the Eastern/Northern portion of Bolivia. Some
individuals traveled up to 3 days to get to the conference, coming via walking,
bus, car, plane, bike and boat- pretty much every possible imaginable mode of
transportation. The plan is to continue this conference each year as a respite
option for indigenous missionaries, for further development and training, for
fellowship and community building.
A quick recap: We have been back in the States the last 3.5 years while Jenna studies to become a midwife. After our move here we have moved two more times for Jenna's placements with midwives to get hands on experience. We now live on breathtaking Whidbey Island for her final placement.
I continue to work as a tobacco Quit Coach and recently reached 8,000 people coached. I never envisioned myself in such a job but I have gained some valuable skills in helping people through addiction and it ended up being a job that worked well with Jenna's school. I was able to get odd hours that fit with her schedule and working from home cut out commute time and permitted me to take my job with me when we had to move for her school.
Jenna graduates June 22 and the following Friday we hit the road for a 3 month tour around the country visiting friends, family, and churches before flying south to Bolivia (with a week long stop in Panama for the South America Mission Centennial Celebration). Also in the trip will be about a month of cultural training in North Carolina.
Right now we are in a rather intense period of Jenna finishing her thesis and catching babies, myself working full time, balancing family life between us, and trying to kick Bolivia preparations into full gear. We are focusing more and more on support raising in order to make our goal of being in Bolivia in 6 months. We have also been thinning down and garage sale-ing our stuff in order to squeeze our lives into 8 suitcases.

So we're back in Bolivia for a 10 day trip to visit everyone down here and see how things are going with the various projects we have been involved in. There should be a newsletter on its way so keep your eye out for it in the mail. We are on our way out to Poza Verde. More updates when we return.Jasonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09536392595082123227noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4646275213062601448.post-69686566057266720412013-03-09T03:31:00.003-05:002013-03-09T03:33:57.444-05:00Home Sweet Home #9We have continued our trend of our ever changing lives and have moved to home #9 since we've been married. We have been here a few weeks and are starting to feel "settled". We are loving our new duplex. Quite the step up from our previous apartment and paying less than if we would have stayed!

In our first weeks here a lot has happened. We have already plugged into a new church that has quickly taken us in. Already they have been helping us out a lot and showing us the ropes here in Mount Vernon.
The pastor introduced us to an amazing group called Skagit Gleaners. This group collects produce from grocery stores in the area that would otherwise be thrown away, sorts through to pick out the stuff that is still good, and gives it away to their members. To join you pay a nominal monthly fee and agree to give 4 volunteer hours a month. We can collect produce up to 3 days a week and so far the limits have been 25-35lbs! Thanks to this group it looks like we are going to be well fed and saving a lot on our grocery bills.
Mikala and the boys

We have had a huge answer to prayer during this whole move. Mission Nannies came through again and provided us with Mikala who will be helping us with the kids the next few months. This comes just in time since Jenna will be starting at the birth clinic before long.

Places we have lived since we were married:
Camp Hill, PA - 3 months (I lived there for a year prior)
India House @ ECHO, FL - 6 months
Block House @ ECHO, FL - 6 Months
Host Family San Jose, Costa Rica - 4 months
Our own apartment San Jose, Costa Rica - 4 months
Santa Cruz, Bolivia - 6 months
Pailon, Bolivia - 1.5 years
Kenmore, WA - 1.5 years
Mt Vernon, WA - ?

We were looking forward to being in one home for a few years for the first time ever but it is not going to pan out that way. Although we are not looking forward to the process of moving, we are looking forward to getting out of this moldy apartment. I don't think we will have to worry about mushrooms growing out of the wall in our next place!

Still mushrooms even after the "repair".

The reason for the move? Jenna was accepted to a birthing center as a student to start getting some hands on experience. The center is about an hour north from here (not a good commute for a baby catching job) and since I have a job that moves with me, away we go! The fact that mold grows everywhere in our apartment, the large increase in rent, and the fact we can get a MUCH nicer place in Mt Vernon for the cost of this place made the decision easy.

that said we are looking for a new nanny to help with the kids! Gabriel just turned 1 and Noah is 2.5 yrs old. Ideally we
would love to have someone come and live with us with a minimum commitment of 6
months. We would give them room, board, utilities and wifi in exchange for
helping with the kids. The nanny would have their own room and would share a
bathroom with our 2 year old. There is a possibility of a stipend but would
require raising support through Mission Nannies. Flexibility is a must as I will be on-call starting in April and my schedule will be very unpredictable. Please
let us know if you, or someone you know, might be interested in serving us in
this way.

So call me a creature geek but I'm excited! I have been trying to get in to the Nactus Awards for a while now and this year I had one of my photos nominated. The competition will be tough but I am just excited to have made it in. The following photos was nominated in Category 8: Scientific Record:

This is a photo of a Hatchet Faced Tree Frog (Sphaenorhynchus lacteus) I found while on a river trip in Bolivia. I heard a frog call I never heard before and tracked it to this guy after wading through mud up to my waist. Turns out braving the mosquitoes and mud was worth it.

If you would like to vote for the nominated photos before Nov. 26, go to http://www.exo-terra.com/en/photography/nactus_award.php You will have to vote for one from each of the 8 categories.
Since our last post we have been settling into the Seattle area we have been doing our best to make new connections since we did not know anyone in the area when we moved here. We found a great church and have been getting to know the people there.
I am still a Tobacco Quit Coach. I have currently coached over 2,000 people in their journey to quit smoking or other tobacco products. It is not exactly a job I ever envisioned doing, but it is great having a job that helps people make positive changes in their lives. I also recently started working from home which gives me more time with the family. I also now work 10 hour shift that gives me a 3 day weekend!

Jenna is currently working through her first semester of Midwifery school. It is a lot of work for her but she is loving studying her passion. Right now it is mostly classwork but before long she will be running around helping catch babies!
The boys are doing great. Noah is learning new words daily and Gabriel is becoming more mobile, nearly walking at times. Noah is quickly picking up his father's love of animals and enjoys playing with his dad's collection of weird pets.
We are staying in touch with the work in Bolivia and are eagerly awaiting the day when we can return. I was able to return to Bolivia this fall to stay connected with the relationships we built during our 2 years there, to see how the ministry is progressing, and look at land for the future training center. It felt really good to be back and re-confirmed our vision to return to Bolivia. It felt like going home.
We also have a new addition to our family. Lindsey joined our family this fall as a volunteer live-in nanny. She has been a huge blessing by helping take care of the kids while I work and Jenna works on her studies.
Jenna and I were able to get away for a few days up on Orcas Island (thanks to Lindsey watching the kids) for our 5 year anniversary. It was a sorely needed very restful getaway. Those 5 years came and went rather fast were sure filled with a lot of adventures!
Gabriel Mateo Weigner was born 12/21/11 at 11:15pm. He was 7lbs 7oz and 20in long. It was a very normal delivery at the Puget Sound Midwives and Birth Center and both baby and mom are doing great (both sleeping at the moment). Noah is loving his little brother. When the first met, Noah gave Gabriel a big hug and kiss with no encouragement from us. He also seems to enjoy the fact that both he and his little brother have a nose.
In other news, I got a job at Alere Wellbeing as a Tobacco Quit Coach. Basically I spend the day on the phone coaching people through their process to quit smoking. Yes different than anything I ever imagined myself doing but it pays the bills and I actually enjoy it! Gabriel's arrival made me take off two days before the end of my training period which ended up not being a problem since they decided to make and exception and graduate me anyway since I was doing well.

Jenna finished her first semester of prerequisites for her midwifery program and completed some workshops that will count toward her midwifery program. She will be taking the next semester off then finishing the rest of her prerequisites over the spring and summer. The next step will be applying for the program and praying that she gets in.

For those of you wondering how you can shower the little guy with gifts, here are a few option:

Registries:
Cotton Babies - http://www.cottonbabies.com/7001.php
This is the company that gave us free reusable diapers when we were working in Bolivia. They are a great company. Be sure to follow the instructions on the site (i.e. when choosing colors or checking out), it isn't as streamlined as some websites.

Babies"R"Us - Search for "weigner" under "registries"
Since we left most of our baby stuff back in Bolivia, we are also looking for clothing under 12 months.
After leaving Bolivia we took a road trip up the east coast starting in Miami and ending in Syracuse visiting friends, family, churches, and the SAM HQ along the way. In Syracuse, we sortedhrough our junk that had been in storage for the last 3-4 years and got rid of the majority of it. After all, we survived several years without it, we could still live without it. We packed up what we wanted to keep and shipped it to Seattle via Amtrak (hint: Amtrak is the cheapest way to ship or move long distances!). We threw the odd shaped stuff into our car (generously donated through the combined efforts of family and supporters) and into my parents van and embarked on yet another road trip, this time from the east coast to the west coast. It was a beautiful drive although challenging keeping Noah happy for 700-800 miles a day.
The idea of moving to Seattle was more intimidating than when we were planning on moving to Bolivia. At least then we had a place to live, a job, and a support community. When we started to move to Seattle, we had no place to live, no job, no car, and knew almost no one in this area. Yet we knew this is where God had been leading us and one by one things fell into place in His time.

First off, some of our supporters and family members pooled their resources and got us a car. Then right before we began our road trip to Seattle, the one family we knew in Seattle (missionaries we met in Bolivia) helped us find a wonderful apartment. We've plugged into a Church and small group and been making friends fast. Then just yesterday I was offered a job. It was a fun ride but is sure feels good to be settled. Jenna has started classes. Noah is growing fast and picking up new things every day. Baby #2 is healthy and growing away.

Thank you all for your prayers and encouragement along the way. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we enter this time of preparation for our long-term return to Bolivia.
Now before I tell you how much I sold it for, let us review a few of the problems I have had in the two years I had this vehicle:

Repaired side view mirror - 3x
Blown Head Gasket - 2x
Radiator problems - Lost track
Replaced alternator - 3x
Timing Belt - 2x
Other belt issues - 3x
Repaired Power steering - 4x
Electrical system repairs - Lost count
Suspension Repair - 1x
Leaky break fluid line (repaired with chewing gum) - 1x
Random parts falling off our car - 6 or 7x
Various other repairs - Who knows
SNAPPED CAM SHAFT - 2X! (Who snaps a Cam Shaft?)
Left unrepaired: Busted turbo, AC pump, oil leak, fuel pump, and who knows what else

Used car prices in Bolivia are very high. We bought this car for $8,000. We sold it for $7,000 two days before we left! Talk about God's timing. The crazy thing is, used car prices are rising so fast in Bolivia that if I had more time, I probably could have sold it for $10-$12,000! Bolivia is one of the few places in the world that purchasing a car is actually a good investment!Jasonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09536392595082123227noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4646275213062601448.post-60382322834044265412011-07-31T18:16:00.000-04:002011-07-31T18:16:58.634-04:00The Last Sunday
<img border="0" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkq-9PpyQ73dbK-dsnNC2u3leUhqk89p7AyEAnfVh0BBIUupbgClhx5OQI1KcZgVuHFRTxiuai-ztxhNb-oPZPt-c0XRPUBDjb-3uOHR5KclTRaGypfXEhQZUKAznRv59BHjg4KT8p6KLb/s320/DSC_0071.JPG" t$="true" width="320" />

Our church family. A popular pet around the city, people often have them roaming around their yards. Among the Ayore, they are a popular dinner dish! They go on Tortoise hunts and bring them back by the dozens and are considered a treat! The one in the photo is one rescued from the stew pot. Here you can buy one for about $5-$10. In the USA you could pay $500-$1000 for one this size.Jasonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09536392595082123227noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4646275213062601448.post-92145097189112279432011-07-11T17:04:00.001-04:002011-07-11T18:03:36.200-04:00Ayore Girls Camp 2011
<img border="0" height="212" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXWCQuS3YpyQMzDxNqQ55FJXlzErEUY47O58zUHP1vqfZMCWFR0ldZwWvMSMmV-0eALbgeJXyLMGMl6pMw-r-qTWyyl-i4NuVxH6y8_EqCTLlzCPf8VHoafWaqhVqcv9WcGtwVm5vuPxw/s320/Bolivia+10+and+11+220-1.JPG" width="320" />
On July 1st a team composed of North Americans, Ayore women, and Bolivians gathered together and prayed that God would open doors to allow the Ayore teen girls to come to camp. God answered our prayers and sent double (almost 60) the number of girls we had even hoped for in our wildest dreams!

10 Ayore Ladies came to participate
We had a great week at camp. It was so much fun to watch the girl’s get excited about learning stories from God’s Word and then presenting them in drama form to each other. My small group was made of 12 girls from Porvenir and Suegay, Ayore communities about 40 mins from my house. I had the youngest girls overall- ranging from 9yrs old to 14 years old. We had great fun telling stories and helping them understand God’s plan for them. I also had an amazing, solid in her faith, Ayore woman, Deisy (Daisy), helping me. Because my girls were so small most of them did not understand Spanish very well so Deisy worked very hard at putting the stories into Ayore and helping to translate their answers to my questions into Spanish so I could understand them. It definitely helped!
But on the other hand there was definitely time and a focus on helping the girls understand who God made them to be and how that should reflect in their lives- specifically in what they should (or should not) be doing with their bodies. We targeted girls who have not been heavily involved in prostitution or drugs yet in the hopes of reaching them before those activities become a major part of their lives.
It started with Jenna going on a 10 day river trip in the Beni while I stayed up to watch Noah. Then we switched, I went for 10 days while she stayed back. Right after I returned we met up with a church team from Georgia and took them out to Santiago to work with the church out there and help with an Ayore conference. Then we came back to Pailon and took them out to Poza Verde. At the end of the trip Jenna had to leave for a week long camp for Ayore girls.
This year's river trips were overshadowed by tragedy. Though the loss was felt throughout this year's trips, they continued on and many village were visited. We were able to hold services in many different communities and ran many sucessful clinics. There were even a few surgeries performed in some rather... creative locations.
Orange Hill Group
A team from Orange Hill Baptist Church in Georga came down again this year. Compared to last year, the car problems were fairly minor. We had one leaky tire and the suspension fell apart on a trailer. We had a wonderful time out in Santiago despite the bitter south wind from Antartica that kepts us wearing all the clothes we brought. Unfortunately the buildings down here are not built for cold and so there is no escaping it.
We held a variety of services in Santiago and had some very meaningful men and womens groups. It was obvious the church was very encouraged by our presence and we by their hospitality. The church out there has been through some trying times and I think the visit meant a lot to them.
Girls Retreat
Jenna is currently at the retreat for Ayore girls. They ran into a little problem, a good problem. They had about 60 girls show up which is about twice as many as they had planned on. This week has the potential to be very important in the lives of these young girls since many are at risk to become prostitutes. It is a miracle that this many girls managed to come since many of the parents do not want their girls discouraged from prostitution because of the income it provides for the family. Please keep Jenna and all the counselors in prayer as they invest in these girls over this next week.
Yesterday Jenna left for a 10 day boat trip in the Beni region of Bolivia in the Amazon Basin. That means I'm home with Noah for that time. Then when she gets back we will switch, I'll be going on a river trip and Jenna will stay home with Noah. What never ceases to amaze me is how so many people cannot believe that a man is capable of taking care of a baby for any period of time. Bolivians are especially shocked and seem to think at least one of us will not survive. Don't worry everyone, we're doing just fine. I am keeping him well fed on soda, keeping him busy playing with knives, and teaching him how to operate motor vehicles.
Jenna was about to get into the shower when she gasped and went running for the closet. I was expecting one of the usual home intruders, not this 9 inch monster that was writhing its way out of the shower drain. It was a Amazonian Giant Centipede (Scolopendra gigantea). They have a fairly potent venom. While not likely to kill a healthy adult, they are still dangerous and not welcome in my house.
